Overview

Gloji is a health and wellbeing app developed by Thrive Tribe to support users aiming to lose weight or quit smoking. Gloji goes beyond traditional health metrics, focusing on a holistic approach that emphasises overall wellness. The app combines personalised coaching, community support, and educational resources to guide users in building sustainable healthy habits rather than just hitting short-term targets like weight or calorie counts.

Thanks to partnerships with Public Health England Commissioners, Gloji is free to residents in diverse locations, including inner cities, coastal towns, and rural areas. The app’s 12-week programs are specifically designed to meet each user's unique needs, providing a supportive environment and actionable guidance to help users reach their health goals in a meaningful way.

Process

After joining Thrive Tribe shortly following Gloji’s initial launch, I focused on enhancing and scaling the app’s functionality to boost user engagement and meet user and business goals. My contributions were informed by user feedback and aligned with Thrive Tribe’s broader strategic objectives. Here are the key areas I worked on:

1. Onboarding Experience

  • Objective: Streamline and personalise the onboarding process to reduce drop-offs and increase user engagement.
  • Approach: I redesigned the onboarding flow to make it welcoming and easy to navigate, ensuring users understood Gloji’s value from the outset. The experience was tailored to guide users smoothly into either the weight loss or smoke free programme.
  • Outcome: This refresh led to improved first-time user engagement, with a significant reduction in onboarding drop-offs.

2. Tracking Features

  • Objective: Create a sense of progress and motivation by allowing users to log and monitor their achievements.
  • Approach: I implemented tracking functionalities that enabled users to visualise their weight changes or count their smoke-free days. Each feature was designed with clear, engaging visuals to highlight progress and provide feedback.
  • Outcome: This tracking system fostered a sense of accomplishment, which user feedback confirmed as a strong motivator in sticking to health goals.

3. Digital Programme Page

  • Objective: Provide a structured, supportive journey for users throughout the 12-week program.
  • Approach: I developed a comprehensive program page that broke down each user’s journey into weekly segments. The page included daily health tips, personalised milestones, and progress insights, allowing users to focus on manageable steps and celebrate incremental progress.
  • Outcome: The clear structure and guidance kept users more engaged over the full 12 weeks, leading to higher completion rates.

4. My Profile

  • Objective: Create a personalised hub where users can track their progress and access program information.
  • Approach: I expanded the “My Profile” section to house key data on user progress, personal goals, and program history. This section became a central place for users to reflect on their journey and stay motivated by viewing past achievements.
  • Outcome: Users appreciated the personalised touch, with the profile section enhancing their connection to the app and their own progress.

5. Articles and Recipes

  • Objective: Equip users with practical, actionable resources to support lifestyle changes.
  • Approach: Collaborating with content teams, I integrated health-focused articles and nutritious recipes into the app. Each resource aligned with users’ goals, providing daily insights on topics such as mindful eating, stress management, and exercise.
  • Outcome: These additions led to higher daily engagement, with users frequently accessing content to support their health journeys.

6. Online Gym Access

  • Objective: Encourage physical activity by offering virtual exercise resources.
  • Approach: I designed an online gym feature, allowing users to access a library of virtual exercise sessions tailored to various fitness levels, from yoga and stretching to high-intensity interval training.
  • Outcome: The online gym sessions helped broaden Gloji’s appeal, especially among users looking for fitness resources within a single platform.

7. Appointment Booking

  • Objective: Ensure users can easily connect with health coaches for personalised guidance.
  • Approach: I added an in-app feature that allowed users to book appointments with health coaches. This streamlined scheduling, making it simple for users to get timely, tailored support.
  • Outcome: The booking feature facilitated more consistent support, and feedback indicated it made users feel more connected to the program.

8. Design System

  • Objective: Establish a scalable, cohesive design framework that supported consistent UI/UX across features.
  • Approach: I maintained and iterated on the Gloji design system, ensuring consistency in colours, typography, and component usage throughout the app. This system supported rapid feature development while keeping the user experience seamless.
  • Outcome: The design system allowed for quicker updates and ensured a visually unified, intuitive experience for users, enhancing usability and satisfaction.

Throughout these projects, I worked closely with product owners, engineers, QA testers, illustrators, and various business teams. My core responsibilities included leading design initiatives, defining UX strategies, conducting user research, and delivering intuitive, visually compelling designs that aligned with Gloji’s mission.

Gloji’s multi-region adoption underscores its effectiveness in helping users achieve meaningful health and wellbeing goals.

The platform consistently meets key performance indicators:

  • Over 75% of users on the weight loss program reported weight loss.
  • 78% of users on the smoke-free program successfully quit smoking.

The success of Gloji is a testament to a user-centered approach combined with collaborative design and development efforts. By focusing on a holistic health experience, Gloji has proven to be a valuable public health tool, empowering users to make lasting, positive lifestyle changes.
